qualifications

Need for Housing
  • Living in overcrowded housing
  • Living in substandard housing
  • Being a resident of public housing
  • Paying more than 30% of gross income on rent
  • Does not own a home at time of application
  • Unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage 
Ability to Pay
  • $1,200 or less in total charged off accounts and non-medical collections. 
  • Medical collections less than 3 years old have total balances that do not exceed $2500. 
  • Medical collections 3-7 years old have total balances that do not exceed $7500. 
  • Any applicant who has filed bankruptcy must have been charged off for no less than two years.
  • Repossessions must be at least 18 months old at time of closing.
Willingness to Partner
  • Household willing to perform a minimum of 250 Sweat Equity hours per adult
  • Have lived or worked in Cabarrus County for the last year
  • Committed to a drug-free community and no serious criminal history
  • Applicants must be legal U.S. residents

Step 01

Attend an Information Session

Attend a mandatory 1-hour session to learn how you could own your very own home!

*Our info sessions are now virtual.

Step 02

Request An Application**

Fill out the application packet carefully and submit all required documentation:

  2. Required documents
  3. $10 per applicant

  6.  Are you ready to turn in your Application for Homeownership? Please click here to choose a time slot to submit your application. Please come to the appointment with your completed application and ALL of the requested documents.

Note: Veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are able to request and submit an application at any time. To do so outside of the open application period, please email tiffanybrown@habitatcabarrus.org.

Step 03

Income & Credit Report

Habitat Cabarrus calculates your income and pulls a credit report. If income and credit meet our requirements, you will be invited to participate in step 4.

Step 04

Complete Documentation

Submit all items requested in the documentation packet by the deadline provided.

Step 05

Background Check

Your criminal background, employment history and rental history are verified.

Step 06

Visit & Interview

Two members of the Homeowner Selection Committee will contact you to set up a time to visit and interview at your current residence.

Step 07

Pre-Approval

Pre-approved applicants begin Homeowner-In-Process training, which includes attending mandatory homeownership classes and completing the required number of Sweat Equity hours.
