Need for Housing
  • Living in overcrowded housing
  • Living in substandard housing
  • Being a resident of public housing
  • Paying more than 30% of gross income on rent
  • Does not own a home at time of application
  • Unable to qualify for a conventional mortgage 
Ability to Pay
  • $1,200 or less in total charged off accounts and non-medical collections. 
  • Medical collections less than 3 years old have total balances that do not exceed $2500. 
  • Medical collections 3-7 years old have total balances that do not exceed $7500. 
  • Any applicant who has filed bankruptcy must have been charged off for no less than two years.
  • Repossessions must be at least 18 months old at time of closing.
Willingness to Partner
  • Household willing to perform a minimum of 250 Sweat Equity hours per adult
  • Have lived or worked in Cabarrus County for the last year
  • Committed to a drug-free community and no serious criminal history
  • Applicants must be legal U.S. residents

Applications may be picked up at the Habitat Cabarrus office or ReStore at any time. Applications are ONLY accepted during advertised dates of open application cycles.  The application cycle is currently closed, but will open this fall.

Questions

The application process takes roughly 6-8 months. The sweat equity requirement takes 12-18 months. It generally takes about 1.5 to 2 years to complete the entire process, from the date of the application to the house closing.

If applicants do not meet Habitat for Humanity Cabarrus’ criteria for homeownership, and are not selected into the program, they will receive a letter with a description of the reason and a list of HUD approved Financial Counselors or a referral to another qualified organization.

There is no limit to how many times an individual can apply for a Habitat home, so we encourage applicants who do not make it the first or second time to reapply!
